It’s possible to bring your pet on your RV vacation. During the drive, you’ll want to follow the below strategies to keep your pet safe and happy.
The More, The Merrier
When you’re travelling with a pet, you need to make sure you keep your focus on driving. If you have a second person along for the journey you’ll have a much easier time keeping an eye out for signs of stress or discomfort. A soothing hand can often calm down an animal, so having a second person along for the trip can make everyone’s life more pleasant.
Hot Cars & Campers Are No Place For Pets
Both cars and campers can go from relatively cool to scorching hot in a matter of minutes, even on a mild day. Even if you leave water for them, an animal can be severely harmed by extended exposure to heat, so don’t ever leave your pet closed up. Make sure that you keep your pets with you if you’re going to be away from the car for an extended period of time. Leave the AC running if you leave your pet in your RV.
Keeping Pets Safe On The Move
While you’re driving, your pets need to be contained in their crate or a closed bedroom with another family member within your motorhome, and if you’re towing, you should keep them in the tow vehicle with the rest of your family in their crate. Letting animals run loose as you drive can cause a huge distraction for the driver. Plus, if you brake hard, they might get thrown into something and be injured. Your pet could also be easily startled by loud noises.
Many cats will choose to hide anyway when in a vehicle, so they’ll prefer being in their crates. Dogs may complain, but it’s safer overall for them to be contained.
Take frequent breaks to let your pets out, give them water and food, let them relieve themselves and walk around, enjoying your company. Travel might be slower with your animals on board, but their happiness is worth it.
